The Best Time to Travel to St. Martin or St. Barthélemy

Climate
The most common misconception about St. Martin and St. Barthélemy (St. Barts, St. Barth) is that it must be much hotter in summer than it is during the rest of the year. In fact, the average monthly temperature remains remarkably stable, varying by only about 5 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.

This stability can be attributed to the tradewinds
(les alizés) which bring refreshing breezes from the Northeast throughout the year, tempering the tropical heat. Summer is actually a great time to visit the islands because villa rates are considerably lower and the beaches and roads are rarely crowded. Many restaurants do close during September and early October.

December through May is considered the dry season while June through November is referred to as the rainy season. However, in our experience, rain showers or clear skies can occur at any time during the year. In general, rainstorms pass quickly and the sun shines on most days. Average air temperatures in coastal areas range from 72º to 86º F. The warm coastal water temperatures stay between 68º and 74º F.

Seasons and Rates
Mid-December to mid-April is the "high season" in the islands as travelers flee colder climates to bask in the tropical sunshine. During the most popular travel times, such as Christmas and New Years, villas are in extremely high demand and their rates reflect it. Smart travelers often make their reservations a year or more in advance to ensure the best selection of available villas.

Hurricanes
Tropical storms and hurricanes may occur any time from June through November and, historically, the most likely time is during early September. Fortunately, every year brings more sophisticated storm warning systems. It is unusual for any one island to be severely affected more than once or twice every 10 years and your actual odds of experiencing a hurricane are very low. Nevertheless, travel insurance is recommended to cover potential weather issues and other unexpected events.
